Woven paper rocket

A few weeks ago I was sent a copy of a gorgeous new paper weaving book by Anna and Lena Schepper. They’re the two geniuses behind the woven paper baubles I made a few years ago.

So as soon as my studio was unpacked, I excitedly got to work! I decided to make their rocket project, and to do it manually as I currently don’t have a printer or scanner.

I traced the pattern out of the back of the book, transferred it onto my paper and then cut the pieces out. The patterns are also available for download.

Following the detailed instructions resulted in this! This is my first attempt, so it could be a little neater, but overall I’m pretty happy with the outcome. The finished project is pretty small; if you’re just starting out with paper weaving, I’d suggest scaling the pattern pieces up before you start.

Just like when I made the paper baubles, I used a thicker paper than suggested in the book as I prefer the look, but it does make it a little harder to manipulate when working at small scales. Next time I’ll follow the suggestion in the book and scale up the project up before I start.

I had a wonderful time making the rocket and now want to move onto the hot air balloons. I think they’d look stunning in Munchkin’s room. Or maybe I’ll make up some new baubles for the Christmas tree this year.

The forty-six projects in the book start from the very basic, perfect for the beginner or for doing with your children, and work through to projects for the advanced. All including wonderfully detailed instructions and pictures.

The pattern pieces are all included in the back of the book, or available for download.

“The Art of Paper Weaving” is available on Amazon for only $15.96 USD at the moment and would make the perfect present for that creative person in your life. Or as a gift for yourself.

If you make up some of the projects, send me a link? I’d love to see your work!
